2006 NAPF/ IPF
North American Championships

The 2006 NAPF / IPF North Americans were held in Dorado, Puerto Rico (just outside of San Juan). We stayed at an awesome little family owned guest house in San Juan and then commuted to the venue in Dorado in our hot little minivan. Traffic in Puerto Rico is crazy to put it mildly, traffic lights and lanes are just a suggestion there because people do what they want when they are behind the wheel. I am glad that Larry, George and Ivan were behind the wheel (I actually think they began to enjoy the driving after a few days).
Among the sight seeing, we went to Old San Juan, the Bacardi Factory (YES, that means free samples), the festival in Dorado, the Rain Forest and of course the beach!
The meet was incredibly hot with Puerto Rico being very humid and the fact that the venue itself was not completed on time. They closed up the unfinished windows with plastic and piped in air conditioning for us. Not sure that helped too much as we were all dripping wet (fun to get suits on and off), but we made do and had a great time. From our team of Iron Maidens, it was Donna and Jane's first International meet, along with Liane and I.
I started off the meet with a shaky start, getting opening squats turned down on depth, I got it on my 2nd and then upped my 3rd to 523. Again, turned down on depth, I was disappointed because I had an excellent training cycle and was ready to try the IPF squat World Record. Missing my last squat took the wind out of my sails and it showed on my opening bench when I got crushed with what is an easy 297. A little refocus and I got my 2nd attempt and took a small jump on my 3rd. Then came deads, which unlike my squats, I didn't have a good training cycle at all, so we dropped my planned opener of 501 to 485 to play it safe. But when I came out for my opener, I was in rare form and pulled a textbook sumo, same with the 2nd and 3rd... and not it was time for a 4th of 250kgs (551lbs). I ripped it up effortlessly (well at least that is how it felt then). Another deadlift world records in the books, I wish I had a chance at a 5th attempt. Following the Saturday competition, there was a closing banquet in Dorado. Thankfully the Iron Maidens planned ahead and brought our stash of Bacardi that we picked up at the factory earlier in the day!
